Leon Breitling 1860/1914. The son of German emigrants, watchmaking creates a workshop in St. Imier, Switzerland in 1884, at the age of 24 years. Since its inception specializes in the manufacture of precision chronographs and accountants.
After eight years, 1892, the premises are too small, and Breitling moved to La Chaux of Fonds, where the majority of watch factories by that time, putting it at No. 3 rue Montbrillant, founding G. Leon Breitling SA, Casino Watch Manufactory, said the workshop had 60 employees.
Leon Breitling died in 1914, taking the direction of his son Gaston Breitling Breitling.
Gaston, take the direction of the company, creating the first chronograph wrist. At the end of the 20s and after several names were chosen Breitling.
In 1915 presents the first chronograph wrist for pilots to switch to 2 am, more natural than to 3h or 6h, for a wristwatch.
After World War I, conducted Breitling chronographs and timers for airplanes. In fact, was a pioneer in the field of timing in aviation, developing the first button chronograph independently until then, the launch and return to zero was made through the crown.
Gaston Breitling died in 1927, soon after, in 1932 assumed the leadership of the company his son Willy Breitling, following on from his father and grandfather, under his leadership, Breitling develops the most famous in the 30s, supplied its timers to the British Ministry of Aviation, this related to Breitling to aviation, in large part because of this contract.
In 1933, establishing the first chronograph with 2 buttons, which allow a resumption of timing after stoppage, which did not allow the monopulsadores chronographs. In 1934 the second key idea of zero, this invention, which allows the accumulation of several successive short time, will give the chronograph its current configuration.
It was a difficult period for the Swiss watchmaking, although the second World War, produced based on orders from the United States, Canada and South America.
1942 The Chronomat, The originality of the Breitling Chronomat was based on incorporating a slide rule with a logarithmic scale, the clock fulfilled its function perfectly, the military allowed him to telemetric or ballistic calculations, the athlete allowed him to speed calculations and a half to engineer the Calculations of performance or production, the commercial agent of the calculations of tax and exchange rate. The Chronomat was fitted with a caliber Venus 176.
The Chronomat was a clock emblematic of the twentieth century, still manufactured today, sixty years after its creation, and is regarded as the first chronograph. A detailed analysis of the Swiss patent at the end of the thirties reveals that in fact the pioneers in the field are not those that might be created.
It was the golden era for the chronograph, the demand was important and the new models went out to regular rhythm, all due to new movements that produced Venus and Landeron, which came on top of the Valjoux in 1944, or the development of clocks and gauges by independent companies such as Universal or Angelus.
In parallel, the firm is expanding its professional customers by providing their watches to the American Air Force. Many contracts were signed with aircraft manufacturers and airlines, pilots acknowledged the high quality of the Breitling chronographs.
The same year also saw the introduction of the model’s most famous Breitling, the Navitimer. A clock tool equipped with the famous computer aviation, capable of performing all the calculations necessary for navigation. Breitling supplied by that time and their on-board counters to the major airlines, taking a huge success among the pilots.
Breitling produced about 250 different models in six categories. Obviously, included his famous chronographs, in addition, Breitling watches also conducted submersible.
In 1952, Willy Breitling, moved to the headquarters of the company to Geneva, while production remained at La Chaux of Fonds. The company had abandoned the manufacture of movements, and became dependent on suppliers like Venus “now”, that saved the cost and allowed Breitling focus on the design and creation of special areas.
The cosmonaut, a Navitimer with a field of 24 hours, was launched in 1962. The astronaut Scott Carpenter, took him on his wrist during his orbital flight aboard the capsule Aurora 7.
In 1969, invents the Breitling chronograph mechanism for automatic loading and in collaboration with Büren Heuer-Leonidas, this represents a significant development for the Swiss watchmaking as a whole.
When the quartz revolution began, Breitling launched in 1975, a version of the Chronomat quartz, was produced in conjunction with its mechanical varieties. A Navitimer quartz was followed the next year, adjusting to the new technology of quartz.
In 1979 the firm was closed by Willy Breitling Breitling voluntarily because of health problems and died the same year. Ron Geweniger, on that date acquired all stocks of Breitling watches at public auction for a low amount, taking advantage of the market for Swiss mechanical watches was depreciated because of the booming Japanese watches, the Swiss franc and the boom inflated by the clocks electronics. The watches were kept in a vault for safety for 17 years, until the obsession for quartz movements began to fade, it was the time to resurrect the movement of mechanical chronographs.
100 years of tradition of Breitling were about to disappear, however. In 1979, Ernest Schneider, the signing Sicur, pilot, a manufacturer of watches and microelectronics specialist, took the leadership of the Breitling brand gaining the rights of the name Breitling.
The two sons of Willy Breitling, Gregory and Alain, were too young to handle the business. Schneider publicly reaffirmed his confidence in Breitling.
In early 1980, the mechanical clock was returning to reappear, and in 1984 launched its first Breitling chronograph mechanic from the death of Willy Breitling, the model was conducted in 1942, a reissue of the Chronomat, also saw the return of the style Navitimer.
Breitling patent reappeared leaving it remained one of the largest manufacturers of watches, tools for professionals.
Today, Breitling continues its involvement in aviation and adventure in all that implies. The World Cup Aerial Acrobatics of Breitling, was launched in 1993 and is recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale FAI, as a world championship.
Breitling has also had success with the Breitling Orbiter 3, the first balloon to fly around the world.
In 2000, Breitling opened its new headquarters in Grenchen.
