On March 22 1881 Hans Wilsdorf was born in northern Bavaria Kulmbach, orphaned at the age of 12 years. Their education was developed in a Swiss boarding school. His first job as an apprentice, what a great performance in signing importers of pearls.
At the age of 19 began working as head of the English correspondence in a business exporting watches, in signing Messrs. Cuno Korten, in Chaux of Fonds, Switzerland.
This work is linked to a friendship that you made to the internship, this signing was a major exporter of watches, with a turnover of nearly 1 million Swiss Francs annually. So Wilsdorf had the excellent opportunity to study the Swiss watch industry.
Before 1903 Wilsdorf had been installed in London working on another signature watch. After acquiring more experience in this firm which had acquired in previous security is the foundation for his signature.
With financial assistance from his brother-in-law, Alfred Davis, the company known as Wilsdorf & Davis, was a failure and went bankrupt. The grounds were dedicated to manufacture wristwatches, this being a little idea appreciated by the male, also the technical problems in which many manufacturers had clock, believing it would have problems in this kind of clock, such as difficulty to produce a movement of this size to be housed in a box small enough, being located on the wrist and the probable entry of moisture (sweat) and dust spoiling the movement.
However, unlike other manufacturers of wristwatches, this was not enough to deter Wilsdorf. The first obstacle was overcome with an acquaintance of Hermann Aegler. Meanwhile the work of Fonds Chaux Wilsdorf came in the ears of watchmakers as well as its ability to produce movements harder to be used in the production of wristwatches small enough and cheap.
In 1905, Wilsdorf, full of conviction of the possibilities of the wrist watch, ordered an order of several hundred thousand francs for these movements, an order which was the largest contract in history until that time. The second difficulty in producing that kind of clock, the silence before the humidity and dust would take another twenty years to overcome.
In Bienne, signed a contract with Aegler, which gave the distribution rights to its signature in England.
But in the meantime, one of the main events in the history of Rolex was already around by the head of Wilsdorf, a name change, but the signing was very successful and was known as Wilsdorf & Davis, Wilsdorf wanted to establish a brand name that identify the company with its own products, therefore, on 2 July 1908 Rolex brand was registered in Chaux Fonds of the low number 24001.
There are several theories regarding the precise meaning of this name, short name, leaving space for the inscription of the name of the trader, easy to memorize, sounds pleasant and perfectly pronounceable in any language eurpea, or perhaps a French-language abbreviation “Horlogerie exquise “.
In 1910, the widespread view that the wristwatches were simple devices, Aegler checked their watches by the official test clock in Bienne, and movements were checked again at the observatory in Kew in England.
In 1914 Jean Aegler & Son put a new name to his company Rolex Co. S.A. of Aegler. To finance the cost of the first World War, the British government decided to impose a 33% tax on imports. Faced with this situation, Wilsdorf decided to transfer its merchant exportation global corporation to Bienne.
In Geneva on January 17, 1920 Wilsdorf founded Montre Rolex SA, as sole owner and director. From now on, the movements were made in Bienne. The assembly, testing and sales were in Geneva.
In 1926 and following the process of innovation and to increase the water resistance of wristwatches, Wilsdorf clear box with screw crown.
On 17 October 1927 Wilsdorf placed on the wrist of a Rolex Oyster Mercedes Gleitze before crossing the English Channel that ended in 15hrs. 15mins.
In 1931, thanks to the technical Emil Borer, Wilsdorf launched the first automatic movement of the rotor, the Perpetual Rolex. Retained exclusive rights, banning the use of automatic movement for any competitor for the next fifteen years.
In 1945 ROLEX launched the Datejust, the first wristwatch chronograph waterproof automatic, with the display of date with automatic.
In 1953 the submarine Lanza (James Bond), the first submersible clock at 100 meters. The conquerors of Mount Everest, the team led by Sir John Hunt, were equipped with timers Oyster Perpetyual.
In 1956, was launched on Day Date, the first timer from wrist to indicate the day of the week in letters and in 25 languages, perfecting the automatic change of date.
On July 06 1960 Hans Wilsdorf died. He left his heirs a thriving business corporation with a turnover of several million dollars, and entrusted Andrè J. Heiniger called “The Great Captain,” the task of maintaining its project and its philosophy, which no doubt has managed to overcome, through technological innovation and designs in the line Rolex. In 1962, establishing the foundation Hans-Wilsdorf, led by 7 notable Genevans who have 100% of the capital of ROLEX.
Until 1970 the production reached 100,000 watches a year. In 1970, the first big climb of ROLEX thanks to the new system of electronic watches (but with this new procedure, badly dominated in the period, the rate of defects of the clocks in total production could reach 40%).
In early 1980 the burden of manual clocks back into fashion and 650,000 copies are sold each year.

Rolex with 3000 employees is the world’s number 1 luxury watch. 90% of the production of watches exported and dispersed by some of the 24 subsidiaries of the company. Rolex watches sold 650,000 annually for an average price of 5,000 francs. A net profit of 25% is what allows ROLEX to be the first contributor to the canton of Geneva.
All the watches are made by hand by workers with a monocular, indispensable for any sliver of dust. The mechanism of each clock must be accurate and should not be delayed more than 4 seconds a day. Most of the 230 pieces of the mechanism of a clock are polished or decorated by hand. It is a century of great refinement that gives fame to the house. So Rolex employs the principle of scarcity and does not hesitate to reduce their production: for example, to get a stopwatch in Daytona steel version, you have to wait several months. 99% of the production clocks are manually charged. For over 70 years, installed in a factory Rolex Bienne produced exclusively for the subsidiary Rolex Geneva.
Since its inception, ROLEX has known only three owners and the same strategy has kept throughout the three kingdoms.
